Manufacturing Day is an annual celebration of modern manufacturing during which manufacturers invite their communities including; students, educators, businesspeople, media, and politicians to their facilities in a collective effort to educate visitors about manufacturing career opportunities and to improve public perceptions of manufacturing. Manufacturing Day occurs on the first Friday in October. This year Manufacturing Day is Oct 6, 2017.

Started in 2012, MFG DAY has seen participation grow dramatically over the years. Aaron Evans VP of InSource Solutions has been leading this initiative for InSource since 2014 by holding different events throughout the southeast and is encouraged by the turn-out of past events.

“If we are purposeful in educating youth on the value and benefit of manufacturing, we believe they will find that manufacturing is an interesting and a viable option for employment,” says Aaron, “Through intentional outreach, and with the aggregate efforts of the entire organization, we can ignite passion and influence youth to consider high-skill careers in manufacturing.”

InSource will be holding 3 events this year in Baltimore, MD, Richmond, VA, and Davidson, NC.

The event in Davidson, NC will be held at the InSource office with two local schools participating.

“Our event will offer a peek into the critical factors required for optimizing a manufacturing environment to produce the maximum output of high quality products at the lowest cost,” says Kevin Modlin, Manager, Manufacturing Outreach & Sustainability Center:  “This will be followed by a robotics competition. Students will be divided into teams and will compete in both technical and business tracks. The teams will be judged on proficiency in programming the robot and in developing a company to sell their idea. The winning team will be awarded a prize for their efforts The event will culminate with a quick Manufacturing Trivia session with prizes for winners.”

The InSource Richmond office will be the location for a LEGO® Maze Challenge, involving students from local schools learning to program robots that will navigate a maze. They will design an advertisement for their fictitious company that sells the robots. Students will work in teams of 5 and local InSource staff will mentor the teams focusing on the technology as well as the business challenge.

The InSource Baltimore Staff will be participating in the Technology Showcase and Matchmaking event being held by RMI (Regional Manufacturing Institute of Maryland). Maryland governor Larry Hogan has been invited to raise the profile of Manufacturing day and proclaim October as “Manufacturing Month in Maryland.” More information for this event can be found here:
