Saw Sharpening – Why Didn’t I Think of This Before? By Brian Premock, Director, Business Development Last night I joined a zoom video conference where all the participants were visible as a grid of faces arrayed across my screen. During the call, each person shared their individual view of our current national emergency. Experiences, as you would imagine, varied greatly. But over time a common picture and central themes materialized from this chorus of voices. I realized afterwards that my job at InSource parallels that video call. Each week, I speak with dozens of manufacturing clients. Each is viewing this crisis through their own lens and working to overcome specific challenges. Some have seen a steep drop in demand, others can’t produce fast enough, but all are creatively trying to pivot to a new normal until we collectively see light at the end of the tunnel. And like my zoom call, there are strong common themes such as working to retain as many employees as possible, while keeping them both safe and productive. A common tactic for the new normal is maintaining productivity by encouraging employees to pursue personal development and/or taking advantage of remote training opportunities to fine tune development skills for current or pending projects. As I reflected on this, I thought of the first time management class I took from Franklin Covey that promoted the idea that to be most successful knocking down trees each week, you had to make time to “sharpen the saw”; an idea that has stuck with me ever since. Timely “saw sharpening” has always been a good idea. The new normal is re-focusing us on what is important right now.
